Active noise cancellation (ANC) reduces some background sounds. It can be helpful on commutes and flights, especially for steady engine noise, but it won’t block everything. Fit and the model matter.
If you want to hear nearby people or your surroundings, consider an open-ear style or a model with a transparency or awareness mode. Microphone noise reduction for calls is a different feature.
